Things you should expect of yourself in a tutoring session
Bring your questions to a session:
Writing down your questions before a session will help you organize your thoughts and make the best of your session time.
Bring your relevant materials to a session:
Your textbook, course handouts, returned tests, and your notes and calculator.
Avoid distractions:
Try to keep distractions like texting to a minimum, but say so if you need a break.
This is not the same as a class:
Ask me to slow down or repeat things you have trouble with. And ask me to skip or go quickly through things you do understand well.
Tutoring is not cramming!:
Don't expect miracles. If, say, algebra, could be fully understood in a few hours, there would be no need for all those years of algebra and pre-algebra, would there? Ideally a tutoring session can tie some loose ends together that make a lot of what you already know suddenly make sense.
Relax:
Don't get stressed, take a deep breath or stretch to clear your mind. Enjoy yourself. Keeping an open mind can help make our sessions not just educational, but also fun!
